Dance

I've Got My Tap Shoes On

Most of you have probably seen Black Swan by now (I was a little late on this). Aside from the dark, twisted story itself, I was totally mesmerized by the actual dancers. Dancing has always peaked my interest… bet you didn’t know I was a dancer back in the day, huh? I never got into ballet like the ladies and gents in Black Swan, but I was pretty much the best tap and jazz dancer (at least that’s what my mom says).

Missing the Old Days

Football season always reminds me of my former life. Back in the day, I was on my high school's dance team - the Central High School Tex-Anns! Being a part of this great group of ladies was the best part of my high school career.

For those of you who don't think dancing is a sport, I can assure you that 4 hour practices every day after school to perfect our pep-rally and football or basketball half-time routines could definitely be grueling. Not to mention the fact that springtime meant competition time. That was when we really ramped up the effort before traveling to Dallas or Houston to compete against dance teams from all over the state.

Dance: An Art Form? A Sport? Or Both?

I was watching So You Think You Can Dance last week when they announced that Gatorade would be recognizing dance as a sport. During the show, they informed us that a few of the dancers went to the Gatorade Performance Lab to “test” their athleticism. It should really be no surprise to anyone that dancers have some amazing athletic ability and I have to say when they announced the recognition of dance, I was pretty excited! So excited that I wanted to read more about it.
